one story, or one conversation.

If your schedule allows, travel during the shoulder season (just before or after peak tourist season). You’ll often enjoy:

- Shorter lines
- Smaller crowds
- More authentic local experiences

Decide how much you’re comfortable spending before booking anything. Include:

A simple budget helps prevent vacation stress later.

Use several flight search engines instead of relying on just one. Compare:

A slightly more expensive nonstop flight may actually be the better value.

Once everything looks right… book it. Waiting too long can sometimes mean paying more. Before clicking “Purchase,” double-check:

- Where I always begin my search. Fast, intuitive, and great for comparing routes and pricing at a glance.

Helpful Cruise Search & Booking Tools
As an Army Brat, I use USAA's travel service for booking cruises. If you do not have this option, the following are great resources for finding the best cruise deals and planning unforgettable voyages.
Skyscanner
- Best all-around DIY booking site. Easy side-by-side comparisons, often includes onboard credit perks, good filtering for itinerary, cabin type, and ports. Cleaner than many cruise line websites. Great for first-time DIY cruisers and comparing multiple cruise lines quickly.
CruisePlum
- Best for deal hunters and data nerds. The secret weapon many experienced cruisers use. Powerful filters, tracks price history, finds hidden deals, great for repositioning cruises and solo pricing. Especially useful if you're flexible on dates, want luxury for less, or love comparing value.
Vacations To Go
- Old-school design, ridiculously effective. Their famous '90-Day Ticker' is still one of the best last-minute cruise deal tools online. Best for retirees, flexible travelers, cheap balcony deals, and repositioning cruises. Not pretty, but extremely useful.
Cruise Critic
- Best research and community platform. Not primarily for booking — better for cabin reviews, ship reviews, port tips, real passenger photos, and live cruise reports. Before I'd book any cabin, I'd check Cruise Critic first.
CruiseWatch
- Simple and beginner-friendly price tracking tool. Tracks fare drops and sends alerts so you never miss a deal.
CruiseLine.com
- Great for price alerts, cruise reviews, cabin reviews, and ship rankings. Also has the popular Shipmate app for tracking your cruise experience.
Shipmate App
- One of the most-used cruise apps overall. Useful for countdowns, itinerary tracking, port schedules, reviews, and deck plans. Very popular with repeat cruisers.
USAA Travel (Cruises)
- A trusted option I use often for booking cruises with straightforward pricing and solid value. Available for USAA members and military families.
Hotels & Places to Stay
From boutique hotels to luxury stays, these tools help you find accommodations that fit your travel style and budget.
Booking.com
- My favorite place to search hotels worldwide, with millions of properties in over 220 countries.
