A Little Taste of Colombia to Start Your Day
During my time in Cartagena, Colombia, one of my favorite daily rituals was enjoying a simple café con leche before facing my very energetic students. It wasn't fancy. It wasn't complicated. It was simply a warm cup of coffee made with plenty of milk.
I've also enjoyed different variations of this comforting drink in Barcelona, Puerto Rico, Miami, and even in my own kitchen.
Café con leche is a traditional Spanish-style coffee drink enjoyed throughout Spain, Latin America, and Hispanic communities across the United States.
Sometimes our favorite travel memories aren't the grand adventures. They're the quiet moments. A morning coffee, a conversation with a stranger, or a familiar flavor in an unfamiliar place often stays with us the longest.
Cartagena Café con Leche
Total Time: Approximately 15 Minutes
Ingredients
- ½ cup strong brewed coffee (dark roast or espresso)
- ½ cup warm milk of your choice (traditional whole milk recommended)
- Sugar or sweetener (optional)
Directions
- Brew a strong cup of coffee.
- Heat the milk until steaming but not boiling.
- Combine equal parts coffee and warm milk.
- Sweeten to taste.
- Enjoy slowly while dreaming about your next adventure.
✈️ Travel Tip from Cartagena
When visiting Colombia (or anywhere), don't rush your coffee experience. Sit. Sip. Savor.
If you're visiting Cartagena, consider staying within the Walled City or nearby Getsemaní for beautiful colonial architecture and walkable streets.
